Matariki Star Bags

WALT- understand Matariki and what the cluster of stars represent
WALT- write a procedural text

How to make Matariki Star Bags-

Equipment you will need-

1. Glitter
2. 1 reusable zip lock bag
3. Hair Gel
4. Water
5. Stars- stickers and glitter
6. Sellotape
7. A3 Black Paper (folded in half)
8. Glue
9. Coloured paper
10. Sharpie pen- Silver and Gold
11. Scissors
12. Colouring pencils

What you need to do:

  1. Get all your equipment ready.
  2. Fold A3 black paper in half and cut a square in the middle (you need an adult to help with this).
  3. Get your ziplock bag and add the glitter/stars that you want.
  4. Add 3 teaspoons of hair gel and add a little bit of water. Make sure you get as much air out as you can when closing the bag.
  5. Make sure the bag is zipped up completely.
  6. Mix up the hair gel, water and glitter inside the bag.
  7. Put 7 star stickers onto the black paper- in order of how the Matariki stars look.
  8. Sellotape the bag into the middle square that has been cut out- over the top of the star stickers.
  9. Glue the sides of the black paper shut.
  10. Write your name on your art- in gold or silver and add your title.
  11. Cut out some shapes on coloured paper, that suit the sky and decorate the border.
  12. Hang them up for everyone to see.

Reflection-
It was really cool because we got to make lots of shapes and use glitter and hair gel and stickers to create our art. We liked adding the glitter and hair gel in because it is not something we usually use in art. It was fun to put the equipment into the reusable bag because we got to choose our own colours.

Next time it would be better if we had more time to decorate so that we could make it look better and stand out more and it would be cool if we could use more colours.

Question- Have you made any Matariki Art and what colours have you used?
